• The European Renewable Energy Council and Greenpeace believes that the world can by powered by renewable energy by 2090.
• 23 September 2090: Total Solar Eclipse in UK. The next total eclipse visible in the UK follows a track similar to that of 11 August 1999, but shifted slightly further north and occurring very near sunset. Maximum duration in Cornwall will be 2 minutes and 10 seconds. Same day and month as the eclipse of 23 September 1699.

• The racing game Ballistics is set in 2090.
• During the events of the Animatrix, a domestic machine named B1-66ER is threatened by its owner, and kills both the owner and a mechanic instructed to deactivate it. This murder is the first incident of an artificially-intelligent machine killing a human. B1-66ER is arrested and put on trial, but justifies the crime as self-defense, stating that it "simply did not want to die."
• In Star Trek the Orpheus Mining Colony on Luna is established. (From Star Trek Enterprise: "Terra Prime").
• The movie 2090: Bad blood is set in this year.
• Vault 29 from the video game Fallout opens in this year.

• Beginning date of Judge Dredd stories in British comic 2000 AD. Judge Dredd stories are set 122 years into the future and progress forward in 'real time' (so stories from 1977 are set in 2099, and stories from 2007 are set in 2129).
